Khwaja Shams-ud-Dīn Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi, known by his pen name Hafez, was born in the early eighth century of Hijri calendar (1321 AD) in Shiraz, and died in 792 Hijri (1413 AD) in Shiraz. Hafez, according to himself, had been memorized Qur’an in fourteen stories and hence has been called Hafez (the memorizer). The tomb of Hafez and the surrounding area, formerly known as Takiya-ye Ḥafeẓ.

Hafeziyeh is the name of a complex in north of Shiraz, in the south of Darvazeh Qur’an. Because it contains the shrine of Hafez-e Shirazi, this complex is known by this name. Hafeziyeh has about 2 hectares area and is formed from two northern and southern courtyard separated by a hall. This complex has 4 entrance-exit door. The main door is located on the south side, two doors are on the west side and one door is on the east side.
After 60 years of hafiz’s death, mirza abul qasim gurakani built the first vaulted-like mansion in hafeziyeh. Hafiz tomb mansion was repaired with the change of kings eras over years.
Shah abbas safavid and nader shah afshar and karim khan-e zand were the ones who repaired this tomb.
Karim khan-e zand was the first person which ordered to put marble stone on hafiz tomb and in reza shah’s era the hafiz tomb was rebuild completely and the architecture was inspired from zandieh era.
The reputation of Hafez and hafiz tomb went beyond the borders of Iran and found some followers in India. Gute, the German poet was later inspired by him. When Hafez died, he was buried in the graveyard of Shiraz. Hafiz tomb has been the cemetery of the city. That’s why even today there are lots of graves in that area and some family tombs can be seen in the vicinity of the mausoleum of Hafez.
Hafeziyeh is near the jahan nama garden and for Iranians, visiting the Hafiz tomb is like going to a relative’s tomb. The feelings, of course, are more with respect than grievance. Some bring rosewater to wash the tombstone and put some flowers on the grave. Then, they touch the tombstone with few fingers praying by reciting a chapter of Koran to ask for blessing of his soul. Some proceed to request Hafez to talk to them through his poems and tell them about the state of their lives or give them some wise advice through the words in his poems. Then, they open their eyes and open the book on any page it randomly opens and continue to read it enthusiastically.
Several rectangular pond have been added amongst the gardens, and well-maintained sour orange trees, paths, streams, and flower beds create a pleasant environment for the tourism hub of Hafez’s tomb and memorial hall, especially in spring the extraordinary smell of sour orange blossom is amazing at hafiz tomb which tourists will love to visit hafiz tomb at that season but shirazi people accept tourists in every season with open arms.
At hafiz tomb’s gate, some sellers have hafez’s love-poems on each sheet which the locals believe that if you take one sheet, the poem will tell your fortune.
At the corner of hafiz tomb there are some shops for buying persian handicrafts. The handicrafts are mostly guide book and love poets of hafiz in any language for knowing shiraz better. But also you can buy some sculpture of shiraz’s historical place like pasargad, persopolice, hafiz tomb , saadi tomb and etc. and eye sore necklace’s that in locals opinion these necklaces keeps the negative energies away.
